Whitefish River First Nation, with the support of the Anishinabek / Ontario Fisheries Resource Centre (A/OFRC), will be conducting a Lake Whitefish Index Netting in the Bay of Islands on Lake Huron. This project will provide general information about the Lake Whitefish. It will also build upon information gathered from last summer’s (2011) Lake Whitefish Index Netting Project. This information will be valuable for making management decisions about this important fishery.
The procedure followed to conduct the assessment will include the use of four monofilament gillnets. Each net gang will consist of mesh sizes between 38mm and 127mm, and will be 475m in length. Nets will be set for 24 hour periods. All sports fish will be biologically sampled for Fork Length, Total Length, Weight, Sex, Age, Maturity and Stomach Contents. All remaining fish will be length tallied.
The project will commence July 30th and continue until August 10th.
